Robert Burns wrote the poem "My Love is like a Red, Red, Rose" in 1794 and it was first published in 1797. It became very popular when it was published matched to the melody, 'Low down in the Broom', in the 'Scottish Minstrel,' published in 1821. Its opening lines often get used, or adapted, for Valentines Day messages “O, my love is like a red, red rose, That's newly sprung in June. O, my Love is like the melody, That's sweetly played in tune.”
This arrangement, of the now familiar melody used for this song, for 3-octaves handbells, designed to be shorter, and accessible, yet ensuring all ringers have interesting parts, includes handbell techniques gyro, tower swing, and echo.
