Over the years I have so far written a series of six recorder quartets in which I have attempted to treat the medium with the same degree of seriousness that one might accord, say, a string quartet. That is not to say that humour is entirely absent (I hope!), but they were not designed to be transparently obvious from the start and require some thought and effort by the performer to get the best out of them. I have tried to keep technical difficulties down to a minimum and they should be within the reach of most ’middle of the road’ recorder players. The third quartet has four movements, Allegretto, Adagio, Allegro and Andante. It was written in 1986 and revised in 1996.
