The work was originally composed as a set of piano duets, commissioned by pianists Jane Faust and Caroline Norwood in Rochester, NY. This version was funded by a Margaret Fairbank Jory grant from the American Music Centre.
Each of the 5 movements of the work is based on 2 contrasting Ragas, one emphasizing high tessitura, the other low. In the quintet version, I have utilised the idea of contrasting and changing colours, while still maintaining the original high-low alternation of each pair of Ragas.
World Premiere: April 8, 2001, Macalester College, Minneapolis, Minnesota
New York Premiere, by WINDSCAPE: October1, 2001, Manhattan School of Music
Mid-West Premiere: Grand Teton Festival, Summer 2002 (the last 2 made possible by travel grants from Meet The Composer).
