This love duet, at the end of Monteverdi's opera "L'Incoronazione di Poppea," celebrates success in power and in love (both, it must be said, somewhat unethically achieved).
N.B. The score and parts are identical to those in Peter Neville's "Pur ti Miro arr for String 5tet". The same work is listed twice on ScoreExchange (once as String 5tet and once as String orchestra) because it suits both ensembles.
Thus, the absolute minimum instrumental requirement is 2 violins, one viola and 2 cellos, with one (solo) violin taking Empress Poppea's part and one (solo) cello taking Emperor Nerone's part. However, in the case of a string orchestra, the additional violins, violas and cellos should be used on the ripieno parts, where they will improve the 'roundness' of the supporting accompaniment.
