Though seldom set to music, I find this to be one of the most profound of all the psalms as it relates to the human condition. Movement one is a powerful rendition of the opening verses of the psalm with numerous changes in texture reflecting the different moods of the psalmist. These climax in a fugue after which the movement returns to the majestic theme of the opening measures. Movement two for unaccompanied choir uses the the tune from the Sterndale Psalter and has a plaintive early American quality as the psalmist stuggles for meaning in life, but ultimately declares his faith in God regardless.
