Processional And Farewell For A Fallen Hero is written in memory of all fallen heroes past, present, and future whose ultimate sacrifice should never be forgotten.
The Processional is a dirge and should be played with much feeling. The transitional section beginning at the Agitato represents the conflict or crisis preceding the heroic act and should be performed accordingly. The Farewell begins at the Religioso. This final section consisting of a combination of The Crusaders Hymn (Fairest Lord Jesus) and Taps, should be played with the same reverence and dignity accorded the performance of Taps at a military function. Be sure the ensemble plays softly at measure 87 so the solo trumpet playing Taps is easily heard.
The dedicatory performance of this piece, directed by its composer, was presented by The Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band June 29, 2002 at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana for their retirees and officers.
