A favourite from Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta Patience, carefully arranged for mixed woodwind trio of flute, oboe and clarinet in B-flat.

Patience (or Bunthorne’s Bride), which opened in April 1881, ridicules the characteristics and ideals of the aesthetic movement fashionable in England at that period. The military characters in the operetta are not at all pleased to discover that they have lost their status as desirable prospective husbands – instead, women now appear to be attracted to flowery, long-haired poets.

In this song from Act I, poet Archibald Grosvenor attempts to woo the dairy maid Patience, asking if she will marry him. He assures her that, although he despises materialism, he is nonetheless ‘a man of property’!
