A masterful and dramatic setting of the familiar Advent hymn, this begins with tentative murmurings, seemingly interminable waiting and brooding longing, with faint glimmers of joyous fanfares. The final statement of the tune is accompanied by left hand arpeggios reflecting Elizabeth's words "the babe in my womb leaped for joy", the bold "rejoice" section repeated with delicious echoes, and receding into an Advent reverie.
