Commentary by Left Brain and Right Brain. LB: "The harmonic minor scale is the same as the natural minor, except with a chromatically raised 7th degree. The interval between the 6th and 7th degrees of this scale is an augmented 2nd. Coincidentally, it is the scale that would result if one wrote the major and minor key signatures on the same staff. For example, G Harmonic Minor has 2 flats and 1 sharp, but of course I wrote only the key signature of 2 flats (B-Flat and E-Flat) and then used accidentals for all the F-Sharps. I was not sure that this was a formal mode until I came upon the term Harmonic Minor". RB: "Baloney! You didn't know what Harmonic Minor was? I mean … haven't you had some semblance of theory training to write as well as you accomplish? Okay, I'll let it go this time. And don't keep writing in a 21 / 8 time signature either." LB: "I'll keep that in mind. This piece was completed in August 2007 in Chicago, Illinois."
