The Prelude and Fugue in E Minor is the third of eight works originally attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach but now more likely to have been written by one of his students or by Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer. The works may have been written between 1730 and 1750 but no firm dating has been established. This Prelude and Fugue is a favourite of many organists and is undoubtedly the best of the collection.

The tempos, articulations and dynamics are editorial additions. Although the fugue is normally played at c. 120 bpm on the organ, my personal preference is for the faster tempo I have suggested when played by the quintet. Some groups may even prefer a tempo as high as 144 bpm.
