My 'Prelude for Wind and Brass' was written in 1996 for the brass and wind sections of the Northumberland Orchestral Society and was first publicly performed by them in July 1997
After a fairly sombre and ceremonial section for brass alone ('Maestoso') the wind enter at a much faster tempo ('Allegro con brio'). The melodic fragments banded about here have quite a syncopated almost 'jazzy' feel to them. Twice the tempo slows for two rather more contemplative sections and shortly after the second of these we return to the mood of the opening. The timpani, however, drags the players back up to speed and the work ends in high spirits.
