This short voluntary is based on the popular hymn tune "Slane" (Lord of all Hopefulness/Be Thou My Vision).

I would not dream of telling an organist how to register a piece for their own instrument in whichever church or hall they happen to be in, particularly as each instrument is so idiosyncratic.

However, the organ this piece was written for has the swell pipes on one side of a hall and the great on the other so the imitative entries were written to be on separate manuals, creating a stereo effect, with the pedals balanced between both manuals. Try to create a sense of this effect on your organ if possible.

If that isn’t possible, just play it all as loud as you can. It’s meant to be bombastic music!
