This polonaise was from the outset intended to be its composer’s contribution to the genre of virtuoso showpiece in the 19th century manner. Of all polonaises in D flat major, surely this is the only one to begin in common time in A minor. The A natural with which it begins is in essence the wrong note, and gives rise to an upheaval that leads to its displacement down to the correct note, the dominant A flat. The note A (sometimes B double flat) plays a unifying role throughout the piece.
