I was impressed by the movie "Moonlight" which I saw on 30 October 2016. It is about a gay black man growing from child to adult during Miami’s crack cocaine epidemic years. The protagonist’s slightly older friend addresses him with the n-word as a nickname.
This film inspired me to the music which I gave the title "Pleasure City", with a rather poignant meaning, understanding under “pleasure” a means of escape from a harsh and bitter reality, as expressed in the first part.
The lyrics of the second part, where I myself recur to the n-word – not in a derogatory manner but a form of expression between black people – play on those by “Prince” (Prince Rogers Nelson, 1958-2016): “I got a sugarcane/that I wanna lose in you/but can you stand the pain?” The music is absolutely my own; I have never heard that of “Prince”.
