Written for our students, this piece will be performed in a charity recital raising money for Cancer Research UK, at St Botolph’s Church, Colchester. The music was written for three soloists and piano, with harmony parts divided between plays on B-flat clarinet, and clarineo in C.
The main theme, shared between the soloists, was originally the first subject of a String Quartet that never progressed past original planning. The more lyrical second subject, dubbed “Ella’s Theme”, represents optimism in direct contrast to the agitated connotations of the first.
Written in modified, through-composed, Sonata form, this piece goes through a variety of modulations and developments of the main themes, before settling on an ambiguously placed unison; the major chords featured in the preceding material hinting to a tierce de picarde.
