The music tries to suggest sound images of rural Appalachia through the sorrowfully expressive timbres of a bassoon quartet. A 'PLAINT is a lamentation, a shortening of the word 'complaint'. The HOLLERS (hollows) are small valley towns, most commonly located between mountains in the Appalachian Mountain Regions. A holler is regionally spoken of as a settlement with "only one road in and the same road out". Contact the composer for any performance questions, comment, etc.
