This poem by Théophile Gautier, published in 1840, was set to music by Nicolas Sokolov in its French text together with a Russian rendition. It has also been set to music by Alain Jacques. Literal translation (AJ):

Plaintive turtledove, Who is always cooing, Would you lend me your wing To serve my loves!

Fly and may your pink foot On a tree or a tower Never rests For I am lovesick.

Go straight to her window Near the king’s palace, Give her this letter And two kisses from me.

Then on my bosom in flame That can’t calm down, Come back with her soul, Come back to rest.
