An arrangement for wind quintet of this attractive piano sonata by Haydn. The first movement features the clarinet in a lively and memorable first theme, and there is even a brief cadenza for the clarinet too. The subdued coda is particularly enjoyable, with the music winding down until a brief flourish right at the end. The second movement features the oboe with a melody which appears several times, sometimes reworked or with elaborate ornamentation. A central section provides contrast with a change of key and a denser texture. As with the first movement, there is a gentle winding-down at the end. The third movement, is a rondo at the tempo of a minuet. The flute has the lilting main theme, and while much of the music is gentle there are also more robust moments in the middle of the movement. At the end of the movement the flautist has the option of playing the final reprise of the theme on the piccolo, but this is not essential.
