The opening begins as a simple line that becomes canonic, with the new lines entering at odd points in the measure, and going at odds with the written meter. The contrasting section brings a more fluid melody grounded by an arpeggiating bass line, which, while remaining more strictly metric than the opening, constantly changes meter from 3/4 to 5/4 and 4/4. The ending is a brief reference to the opening material as opposed to a full restatement of ideas.
