Perceptions of Strife is a three movement sonata for unaccompanied clarinet composed for IU Southeast student Carrie Ravenstem. It was premiered on April 16, 2012 in front of an audience of approximately fifty people and recorded at TNT studios on April 27, 2012. The approximate running time is around ten minutes. The intention of Perceptions of Strife was to capture and illustrate the many controversies that surround our voluminous conflicts faced on a daily basis. The idea was rooted in the attacks on Pearl Harbor, however it is important for one to know that this piece should not be focused specifically on that day, or was in general.
In her performance, Mrs. Ravenstem took the composition and related to her constant struggles in her search within herself to find her calling in life, which is surprisingly similar to the conflicts that I have found in my quest to be someone I can be proud of. I have chosen this interpretation as the founding purpose behind Perceptions of Strife because I believe it is something we can all relate to, not just as musicians but as human beings. Life rarely goes as planned, but your strife is all about how you perceive it to be.
On May 7, 2012, Carrie Ravenstem received a music performance degree from IU Southeast. Many would consider this the greatest accomplishment of her life, but to her it is just the beginning of a long journey of success and happiness. - PJF
