Composed in 1839 in F# min under the title "Pensée des morts" this song was only published later, in 1867, under the title "Jour des morts" and with the tonality raised to A min.
We have kept the original title which is also the title of Lamartine’s long poem but chose the A min tonality.
This poem by Lamartine has also been set to music by Charles Gounod and by the popular songwriter and singer Georges Brassens in 1969.
