The drums and trumpets are essential to create the martial atmosphere of this piece, whose title seems quite ironic. Rupert Brooke’s poem depicts the enthusiasm of young men going to war in 1914. Like Sassoon in his early poems, he describes the spiritual cleansing afforded by the war. Unlike Sassoon, who lived to see the full horrors of war in 1916 and changed his view dramatically, Brooke died from septicaemia in 1915.
