An intensely chromatic pavan from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Dedicated to Mrs. Katherin Tregian, presumably a relative of Francis Tregian, who it is conjectured, produced the book while imprisoned for his Catholic faith, this piece is highly expressive; one might almost say romantic.
It is suggested that this be programmed with other items from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book - for example, Pakington's Pownde, Pavana Chromatica and The King's Hunt make a nice group.
The suggested tempo is mine, as are the dynamics.
N.B. The ornaments may look like subdivisions of notes, but the meanings are rather different! I have retained the ornamental signs from the original, as the meanings are not conveyed very accurately by other available ornament signs. A single stroke through a stem implies a run up of two notes to the note in question; a double stroke implies a mordent that may extend into a trill or something more decorative, dependent on context and the player's individual style. Omitting any ornament is also perfectly acceptable.
