This is an evocation in sound of an incident recounted in Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Huck swims out to meet a huge raft on the Mississipi river. Unobserved, he clambers aboardand and hides behind a barrel. The crew of about twenty men and their captain must take evasive action. A large paddle-steamer is bearing into their path. They successfully avoid a collision. Then one man takes out a fiddle, another starts "pattin juba" and "the rest just turned themselves loose on regular old keel-boat breakdown". This dance is the central part of the piece.
