Many churches use a string orchestra or quartet at Christmas, and the Sinfonia or "Pastoral Symphony" that opens the second part of Bach's Christmas Oratorio, with its lilting rhythm, is ideal. The original scoring for strings, two flutes, four oboes, and continuo isn't always at hand, so in this useful arrangement the organ plays both the continuo and oboe parts. Since the flute parts duplicate the Violin I and II parts they are optional.
