Passing Time (Nos. 1 - 6) is a set of semi-improvisational piano solos, composed during October 2000. They are works that are structured to "investigate the concepts of sound, silence and time" and have an underlying sense of darkness, loss, melancholy and pretentions to augusteness. Notably, they were conceived, not as concert pieces - they are simply too doloroso to perform in one sitting - but as atmospheric music; sound to pass time while engaged in some other solitary or intimate pastime.
A grotesque lullaby? No.5 gently rocks along finding it impossible to resolve the dichotomy: sweet or sinister? The piece is more through-composed than the others [in the set], not possessing a ABA structure. though its dotted rythyms and ornaments are ever-present…
