"La Reine Hortense", as she was known during Napoleon’s time, was the mother of Napoleon III; she composed many "romances" (songs with much feelings made popular by Jean-Jacques Rousseau): this one, in particular, became a most famous hit in the 'salons' and all over the Empire. The word are not by the Queen but by the Count de Laborde.
