Johann Hermann Schein (1586 " 1630) was a German composer who was one of the first to import the early Italian stylistic innovations into German music. Possibly his most famous collection was his only collection of instrumental music, the Banchetto Musicale (Musical Banquet) (1617) which contains 20 separate variation suites; they are among the earliest, and most perfect, representatives of the form. Most likely they were composed as dinner music for the courts of Weissenfels and Weimar, and were intended to be performed on viols. In Padouana #22, Schein shows his amazing talent in a delightfully complex piece that deserves more respect than its intended background dinner music belies. Listen to the MP3 recording by The Brethren Brass for a "real" and accurate performance.
