The first movement opens with a slow, sinister theme which gives way to a quicker main section. The secondary theme is also dour and is developed with a complex rhythmic variation. The second movement is slow and strong with many hanging chords. The intent was to generate atmosphere. The third movement is more demanding for the performer with a difficult first section. The main theme is then developed and broken up with a loud 'maestoso'. Don't be afraid to turn up the reverberation on your sound card (as it enhances the work)- this piece will sound best if played in a large church or cathedral.
