These variations were written for a student quartet formed at Bretton Hall in Yorkshire and played at the final concert of our college time there in 1954. The Theme loosely includes all the notes of a diatonic scale in a nod to serialism and is in the form of a short Canon. Each successive variation makes use in turn of the intervals of a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh with a Finale in syncopated style. An eighth variation in the form of a short Fughetta has recently been added.
