Victoria's setting captures the subtle awe and wonder present in this traditional Christmas text:
O great mystery
and wondrous sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord
lying in their manger.
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy
to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!
Written during Victoria's stay in Rome, the motet includes both Italian and Spanish characteristics. The long, sustained lines are similar to those of Palestrina (a contemporary and possible mentor to Victoria during his years in Italy). However, the harmonic language and biting dissonances point to Victoria's Spanish roots and his dramatic sensibilities.
