Byrd's Gradualia is chiefly a collection of Mass Propers for the feasts of the church year, but in many cases includes, as here, settings for the Office. O admirabile commercium is the Magnificat Antiphon at Vespers on the Feast of the Circumcision, which until recently was celebrated on January 1st.

The piece is by no means as familiar as the companion piece O magnum misterium (also available in our Edition), possibly because of its unusual scoring SSAB.
