Originally a German Christmas Carol based on a Thüringen folk song (1826) with words by Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger (1816-1890), this song has long been popular in Spain and Mexico in its Spanish translation. The accompaniment is for guitar, bass, and requinto (a small 3/4-size guitar tuned a fourth higher and used for playing melodies). The music for the requinto is written in CONCERT PITCH, and a guitar can substitute for the requinto using the same music by transposing up an octave on the opening and ending melody.
