This work is a musicalization of Colombian poet José Asunción Silva's (1865-1896) Nocturno III, a Romantic piece of beautiful poetry from one of Latin America's best Nineteenth Century authors. The piece is set for voice (soprano or tenor) and guitar, and it explores the intrinsic moods of the poem, as the author reflects about a lost love, taken from him by Death. There are three basic moments in the poem: one in which the lover remembers the feeling of walking at night with his beloved; a second one in which he realises the crude true of her death; and a third one in which his soul, represented by "his shadow", is reunited with his beloved's "shadow" through poetry (and, in this case, through "music" as well). This shows us that Love can conquer even Death itself, and that this miracle of human love can be brought forth by art when it is connected to the most intimate Self.
The piece demands a great performance mastery both from the voice and from the guitar. It explores complex rhythmic structures and combinations, as well as non-traditional harmonic settings. Nonetheless, it stays grounded on Tradition, and does not seek to deny it. In a way, this is what happens in the poem: the lover lets his heart fly towards his deceased beloved's spirit, while he himself stays rooted in acknowledging his own reality.
