I wrote this piece, alongside "In Memory of his father, Ingulf", for my daughter to play during a week-long residency at our local museum, where I was tutoring a class of enthusiastic young composers. We were all inspired by the museum’s artefacts and the stories attached to them.
In complete contrast to "Ingulf" which was about a grieving Viking, this piece was inspired by a new exhibit celebrating the industry and history of our local nuclear power station. The display made me think about our society’s insatiable need for electrical energy. I considered how crazy it is that we’d rather build another new power station than choose to turn off the lights when we leave a room!
The result was this rather crazy little piece. I was demonstrating to my students the potential for considering atonality - not a place I often choose to visit as a composer, as I love a good tune with heart tugging harmony, but for the purposes of illustrating man’s madness, it’s an ideal framework!
This piece is best performed alongside "In Memory of his father, Ingulf" to provide comforting harmonic contrast. ;) It can be performed with either string quartet or small string orchestra accompanying the solo clarinet.
