This short work can be likened to a scene from the composer�s Sixth Symphony: a scene that went awry. The main theme from the first movement of that work is presented and developed here in a manner that would have been preposterous in the symphony. The tempo, an unbroken Risoluto con moto from first to last bar, gives the music a relentless driving force almost demonic in its intensity. The pounding accented bass throughout most of the work is joined in many places by very rapid scurrying figures in violins, woodwind, and harp that lend the atmosphere a sense of impending doom. The work ends in heavy minor mode with pizzicato strings underlining a wailing oboe.
