The origins of both these English songs are uncertain, and it is likely that �Here�s a health unto Her Majesty� was intended not for a Queen but was written to celebrate the Coronation of Charles II as King of Scotland in 1650. During his residence abroad Charles II had developed a taste for French music that influenced the revival of secular music after the Restoration, but this was to have no permanent effect; the national spirit was too strong, and was accompanied by immense patriotic fervour, and besides, the succeeding reigns were marked by the work of the greatest and most original musical genius whom England has ever produced, Henry Purcell.
Purcell died in 1695, and some 82 years later in the reign of King George III the first reference is made to one of the most familiar regimental marches, �British Grenadiers� which according to records was sung on the battlefield in 1777, and provided one of the most potent and enduring demonstrations of the power of music to inhabit and promote the image of British patriotism.
