Music for Horn and Strings is a short, single movement work which falls into three sections. The first is reminiscent of recitative, while the middle, faster section is based on material that is slightly grotesque, dance-like and often contrapuntal. The last section refers back to material heard in the first section. The horn part contains sounds and passages which (it seemed to me) were played at private moments, such as warming up, and maybe include a touch of arrogance within the sound. The strings are not to be outperformed, and an element of irritation is apparent in their sound as they offer a (slightly over the top) tutti in response to the bullish opening passages from the horn before the first section settles down. The element of rivalry is apparent throughout the piece: the strings clearly think they have supremacy as they rise ecstatically in the last section while the horn reflects, before possibly gaining the upper hand.
