Originally written for horn and string quartet of vln, 2 vlas and cello, this was a tricky piece to arrange for wind quintet. Mozart’s composition rarely has any of the three lower strings playing higher than the horn (when the strings are accompaning). I made the decision, in my arrangement, to share the violin part between oboe and flute. The clarinet and bassoon cover 2nd viola and cello. The 1st viola part, when within the range of oboe or flute is covered. However, sometimes when the notes were too low for either flute or oboe, I omitted them, but still retained Mozart’s chord structure. I rarely transposed them up an octave. All of this, I feel, allows the horn solo to come through and be heard. I have included both horn in Eb and horn in F. Other movements available:see related scores
