Unfortunately (or fortunately?) when I sat down to continue work, I got side tracked into writing this little ditty.
As a sketch piece I was interested in how several layers of texture would work together, and how different melodic cells can be used against one another. I will also admit that once the ideas began to formulate the instrumentation was suggested to me by the 1st Movement of Stravinsky's Three Movements for String Quartet.
The piece grew out of the very simple piano idea of a repeating hocketted chord, with the other parts quickly suggesting themselves. With a few alterations to this idea to add interest, the piece then pretty much wrote itself.
