Morning Star Risen is sung to Bunessan, better known as ’Morning Has Broken’.
Use: Easter, matins, general worship
It has a flute (or fiddle or other solo folk instrument) bridging passage.
Presented here for guitar and voice it is best played with piano accompaniment.
An Easter song, Stanza 1 uses the Morning Star as the first sign of the coming day, an image suggested by the early English historian Bede, to parallel Christ being the first of many to be Resurrected. This metaphor echoes Paul in Romans, “Creation groaning” giving birth to the first of many re-born. Stanza 2 is inspired by the patristic writer Origen (De Principiis 1.2.7). Stanza 4 refers to the appearance to Mary Magdalene in the garden in John 20.
Morning Star Risen was written on a visit to Durham Cathedral.
