This poem by Victor Hugo, dated 1834, has also been set to music by Edouard Lalo ("Souvenir"), Charles Widor ("Contemplation") and Alain Jacques. Literal translation (AJ):

1._My arm was clasping your waist frail And supple like a reed; Your breast was quivering like the wing Of a young bird.

2._For a long time silent we gazed The sky where was going out the day. What was happening in our souls? Love, Love!

3._Like an angel revealing itself You were looking at me in my night, With your beautiful starry glance Which dazzled me.
