Molly Malone (elsewhere known as Cockles and Mussels) tells the story of the iconic 17th-century Dublin fishwife, who sadly died young of a fever.
This arrangement was written to give three sisters in the same voice studio an opportunity to perform together. It could also, of course, be sung by an upper-voice SSA choir. Each voice is showcased in a solo capacity, and the voices also combine in harmony, while the piano part is, intended as the piece opens, to evoke a celebratory Celtic flavour, the harmony darkening and becoming more dissonant and moving to minor mode in a kind of funeral march as Molly's tragedy approaches and unfolds. Voice 1 speaks the text as Molly's ghost returns to haunt the streets of Dublin. The voices fade out in unison at the conclusion of the piece.
Vocal range is B3 to G5, and singers will need to be able to sing securely in parts, though they are not individually difficult.
