The Medlock is a river which rises in the hills above Oldham and flows through the borough towards the broader river Irwell and the Manchester Ship Canal. (Do, please, read the note to the first movement.) Park Bridge, a village in a valley where the industrial revolution threw up raucous, grating steel works and mills, is now a quietly respectable Heritage Centre. At the beginning of this
movement the still young river Medlock is depicted flowing peacefully again and in its lushest setting within the modern metropolitan boroughs of Oldham and Tameside. This is followed by an angry fugal reminder of the bad old days of the cotton and steel mills - with their exploitation of natural resources and 'the souls of men' that is a blot on the heritage of any nation. Finally the music subsides into resignation as the river flows on and the factories have disappeared.
