Shortly thereafter, I wrote an arrangement for trumpet solo and band which my son, Jim, performed on several occasions with the Acton High School Concert Band. On revisiting the piece this year, I realized that it would make an excellent teaching work for many instrumental soloists with piano.
Understanding and performing jazz well requires students to work with their ears rather than their eyes. Listening to great players is essential. Motherless Child is an ideal piece to help students free themselves from the tyranny of the metronome and play with authentic feeling. The work must ebb and flow.
