'March to the scaffold' was started in 1996 and completed in 2006. The piece began life during an A-level lesson and the main idea (bb1-27) was scribbled down in one of my manuscript books. I recently dug the book out and decided to complete the piece as I had always liked the theme. The middle section (bb28-61) was added in March 2006 and is totally improvised using Sibelius to record the ideas. The returning theme which ends the piece was then considerably altered to make it more dramatic. The piece ends (a' la Berlioz) with the head being cut off.
