In January 2013, I embarked on a trip to Mbale in Eastern Uganda. I was working with a UK charity founded by Mr. Philip Monk “Ugive2Uganda”; and part of this is the East Uganda Youth Music Foundation. The aim is to give the young people of Mbale hope for the future through music. The band members also earn some money through music by taking part in various engagements. A large number of engagements involve marching for about 8 miles in extreme heat without a water break and I had the honour of taking part in such an engagement during my trip. When they are playing on the march they play their local traditional songs and whilst I was there I took the opportunity to write these down. This is a British style march using a compilation of these songs: - Sanyu Lyange, Subala and Wanjagala.
Many of the players come from very poverty stricken backgrounds, with the ever constant threat of Malaria and disease. These small monies that are earned through various engagements are making a big difference in helping some of the poorest families in Uganda. Hence, I am donating the profits from the sale of this march to the East Uganda Youth Music Foundation.
