A VALEDICTION: IF IT SHOULD BE
Text: Mr. Brown, Dithcling, Sussex.
Music: Gerald Manning
I composed this valedictory song, when, like many animal lovers I had to make that momentous and awful decision to have my Golden Retriever Karla put to sleep. Grief manifests itself in many different ways and for many different things, so I make no apology in expressing mine in memory for a devoted and loving companion.
Unlike most of the songs in this collection, which deal with human emotions in its various guises this song is an expression of remorse and grief for a deed, which is always accompanied with a feeling of guilt, regret and compassion. The guilt manifests itself from having to make a decision that will end a life; the regret was that that life was all too short, and the compassion is the knowledge that all pain and suffering have finally found closure in peace.
