GERALD MANNING
This chamber work was composed in September 1955 when I was just eighteen years old. Even in those far off days I was prone to bouts of melancholy, and the plaintive voice of the Oboe suited my mood at the time, so I choose it as the main protagonist in this brief utterance of grief. In the first performance given in the October of that year, I played the Viola partnered by two very fine musicians on Oboe and Violin.
