The Principal of George Watson’s College in Edinburgh is a proud Welshman called Gareth Edwards. He retires in June 2014 and, for his last big orchestral concert as principal we wondered what would be a good piece to play as a grand finale. The orchestras and bands at Watson’s are very good but we also have a world champion pipe band. We thought it would be nice to combine all these elements and to perform something that would have real meaning for Mr Edwards. So, with a great deal of cloak and dagger, I, as resident Welsh composer on the staff, was tasked with arranging the Welsh national anthem for massed orchestras, wind bands and pibe band. In the performance we managed to add piano and organ too. The key is too low to sing due to the restrictions of the bagpipes but, in performance, it was stirring and moving. This might go down well at a pre/post rugby joint concert between Celtic cousins.
